What's New at Rio - Oranges

For its latest project, Rio-Oranges has chosen land in the scenic lake district.

Saquarema, 100 km north of Rio de Janeiro, is an ideal location for their orange plantations. The soil is rich in nitrates and with good drainage and no extremes of temperature. Most of the land in this area is devoted to livestock but there is also a history of citrus growing and citrus trees flourish readily in this location. Land here is inexpensive and there is a plentiful supply of low-cost local skilled workers. The proximity to Rio makes it very accessible logistically
The total area of around 500,000 sq mt has been zoned into 5 orchards of about 80,000 sq mt each (approx. 20 acres each). Adjacent areas of land of several hundred acres have been earmarked and reserved for further expansion.

The first two orchards of 80,000 sq mt have been planted with 4000 orange trees each. Prospective investors in the cooperative can thus view for themselves what their orchard will look like and can follow the development of the project. A third orchard of 4000 trees has also been sold to another investor and this will be planted subsequently. (See: 'Products' for details of costing, prices, etc.)
